Overview
Mail2sms is a free service to receive your Gmail emails on your cell phone. Mail2sms periodically connects to Gmail with your password to retrieve incoming emails, then forwards them to your phone using Google Calendar reminders.
What if you don't use Gmail ?
Then it won't be as easy. In order to receive sms notifications, you need a Google account to access Calendar. Anyway, you can set this up in little time. Juste create a Gmail account, and then set up Gmail to fetch your mail from your current inbox (you probably want to leave a copy of retrieved messages in your current inbox). Then install Mail2sms as follows with your new Gmail account.
Installation
First of all, you need to register your mobile phone with Google Calendar. Otherwise your email will appear as events in Calendar, but no sms will be sent.
Once that is done, there are three ways to setup Mail2sms for your Gmail account :
The gadget in the Gmail sidebar
- The form in the sidebar of this page automatically registers your account.

Our embedded Gmail gadget, which you can be set-up as follows. The advantage is that the controls stay close to your hand.
- In Gmail, enable the Gmail Labs feature called "Add any gadget by URL" (last in the list).
- In the Gadgets tab that appears in the settings, add this URL :
http://mail2sms.fr.nf/gadget.xml.php - The gadget appears in Gmail's sidebar. Just enter your Gmail usernames and password
- The same gadget but on iGoogle : mail2sms gadget in english.
Tweaks
Mail2sms has a "paused" mode to stop sending sms for a period of time. Use it on vacations to stop your work email from bothering you.
New : Mail2sms creates events in a dedicated calendar so that it does not mess with the main function of Google Calendar. Feel free to use it as a timeline of your email.
SMS have a maximum size of 160 character ; to get the most out of it, you can remove the "Reminder: " Google header and the date by switching the Google Calendar interface to a language it does not support (in the settings), for instance Chinese. Alas a few cell phones will have trouble displaying those messages.
Privacy
You should keep in mind that, unlike some address book importers from sites such as facebook, this service has to store the password of your google account. There is no other solution for the service to access your email. We do not store passwords in a human-readable form, and we will never use them to our advantage but please consider the risks before registering. To improve security mail2sms only connects to Google with https (SSL secured connections).
